2018 Australian Junior Championships (Darwin, NT) – Individual Event

Congratulations to Greg Chan who became the 2018 Australian Junior Under 15 Boys Champion by defeating fellow Western Australian Oscar Curtis in a hard fought, five game contest (11-5, 6-11, 7-11, 11-3, 11-3) at the recent Australian Junior Championships held in Darwin, NT.

It was Greg’s fifth straight title having won the Under 11 event in 2014, the Under 13 event in 2015 and 2016 and the Under 15 in 2017. In his first year in the Under 15 age group, Oscar produced a meritorious performance in pushing Greg to five games before having to settle on being runner-up.

Eric Marsh showed great character to win the 2018 Under 11 Boys title. After losing a very tight five game match to Michael Lawrence from Queensland in their round robin pool, Eric had to fight his way back into the event by defeating the winner of the other pool (Nickolai Wolpers from Queensland). In doing so he earnt a second chance against Michael Lawrence and was determined to make the most of the opportunity. He had to draw on all his resolve after losing the first two games but recovered to take out the title (9-11, 10-12, 11-2, 11-9, 11-7)

In the Under 13 Girls final Isla Harris was unfortunate to just get pipped by Maja Maziuk from New South Wales in a very even and see-sawing five games (7-11, 11-7, 8-11, 13-11, 8-11). Indications are that it could be the beginning of a competitive rivalry between the two girls with both being eligible for the Under 13’s again next year.

Western Australia had two additional players make it to the podium with Erin Classen (Under 15 Girls) and Daniel Marsh (Under 13 Boys) being successful in the play offs for third place in their respective events.
