Thanks Eric Gray
Another great edition of the Dunlop Junior Cup took place at Squashworld Cambridge recently on the 13th and 14th of September. It was a weekend of intense matches and rivalries. There was 44 total entries, 4 in our novice event. All together, we had 3 divisions, each including 4 teams of 3-4 players. Teams were selected based on ability, and a round robin format kept things exciting, as nobody was out of contention until the final results came in. The novice players played with a modified ruleset, including faults when serving and shorter serving requirements. They played as the 4th line in division 3, allowing them to still contribute to a team, despite the modified ruleset.
A few people deserve extra recognition for their efforts during this tournament:
First of all, Tim Cowell, who despite a debilitating back injury that put him in hospital, was still able to complete the draw and run things from behind the scenes. Without him pushing through, the tournament wouldn’t have been possible.
Due to a teammate being unwell, one of the teams in Division 1 was down a player. However, the heroic Ella Clarke stepped up. This resulted in her playing two matches in every round, with many of them going to 5 games! Due to her efforts, her team was able to finish as the runners-up in Division 1.
Alexander Marsh put on a dominant display this tournament, winning every match and only dropping a single game. His exceptional play and team leadership resulted in his team winning Division 1.
Thank you to Dunlop, our tournament sponsor. They have been supporting this tournament every year, providing us with great prizes to give to our winners. We couldn’t do it without their support.
Thank you to Cambridge Squash Club for catering and Mirrabooka Squash Club for donating food. All of this resulted in a wonderful canteen, with our volunteers providing much needed sustenance to players and parents.
A big thank you to all parents and junior coordinators who brought their kids along and supported them throughout the weekend. Many parents stepped in to assist with marking and refereeing, which was great to see. The tournament wouldn’t have run so smoothly if it wasn’t for all of the supportive parents.
