Squash Australia Awards Night – 5 Recipients from WA

On Friday 25 November 2022 the squash community came together in Brisbane to celebrate the achievements and contributions of all the legends and rising stars of the sport.

Western Australia was represented well, coming away with a total of five awards.

Erin Classen won the Sarah Fitz-Gerald Junior Player of the Year (female) award:
“Erin was one of Australiaโ€™s most consistent junior performers throughout 2022, reaching the final of the Australian Junior Open and Australian Junior Championships, as well as performing impressively at the World Junior Championships in Nancy, France. Erin has performed well on the PSA World Tour this year, reaching her highest World Ranking of 130.”

Oscar Curtis won the Chris Robertson Junior Player of the Year (male) award:
“Oscar has been Australiaโ€™s undisputed top male junior for the past three years, and in 2022, he made his long-awaited World Junior Championship debut as Captain of Australiaโ€™s Junior Menโ€™s team. After fantastic results in the individual event, Oscar showcased his immense talent in the teams, defeating highly regarded opponents. Oscar also reached the semi-finals of this yearโ€™s Australian National Championships, he is ready to take on the PSA Tour.”

The Paul Vear Administrator of the Year award was presented to Kane Fasolo:
“Kane Fasolo is well known in the WA community for his passion and support for Squash over the past 17 years. A player and operator of four squash centres around Perth including: Cambridge, Brentwood, Hilton and Australiaโ€™s largest centre, Mirrabooka. Kane has been instrumental for squash in Perth, working closely with WA Squash to host various events, including Country Week which sees over 200 participants entering and this year being a pivotal asset when hosting the 2022 Australian Junior Championships at Mirrabooka. Kaneโ€™s relentless passion and support for squash within WA has seen a significant increase in participation.”

The Innovator award was presented to Ken Watson for the Big Hand enterprise he established to enable children of all ages to make contact with the ball not only in squas, but across multiple sports.

Dean Williams was inducted in the Squash Australia Hall of Fame:
“Dean stepped into the position of General Manager of Squash Western Australia from January 2019 to March 2022. During this time, he managed to restore the finances, increase player membership, sold the Associationโ€™s asset and procured a new Headquarters location. Dean also raised the profile of Squash at WA Government level and in the wider community. In his younger days Dean played on the professional world circuit from 1977 to 1992 with great success including a World Number 2 Ranking. In 2003 Dean was inducted into the Western Australia Hall of Champions before being inducted into the Squash WA Hall of Fame in 2005. Deanโ€™s overall commitment to the sport makes him a worthy recipient of this recognition.”

All very worthy award recipients that very much deserve such prestigious recognition.ย  Please congratulate them next time you see them!
