Once a month, WA Squash profiles one of our wonderful Clubs, alternating between Metro and Country.
Why do we do this?
- Promote awareness of facilities
- Increase facility usage
- Recognise people in the squash community that go above and beyond
- Give publicity to sponsors/supporters
- “Put faces to names”
- Promote pride in the Clubs people belong to
Miss January is the fantastic Marmion Squash Club, which is based out of The Squash Factory, 18 Garino Rise, Wangara. 📍
We spoke to Club President and all-round lovely lady Sue Cowell about what and who MAKES the Club.

Each year they run three major events: Marmion Junior Squash Classic, Marmion Junior Teams Challenge, and Masters Spring Teams Tournament.
They have a very busy weekly schedule comprising something for everyone, every day of the week:
- Monday: King of The Court and Ladies League
- Tuesday: Night Pennants
- Wednesday: Club morning, day League, and evening Round Robin
- Thursday: Mixed League, State & State Reserve League
- Friday: Junior programs, evening Round Robin
- Saturday: Club training, afternoon Round Robin.
- Sunday: afternoon Round Robin
Phew!
We asked Sue who the MVPs are at the Club:
- Carolyn Bunting: Coach & Co-coordinator of the Friday afternoon junior programs since 1999!
- Ed Jennings: Pennant Captain and Club Mr Fix-it.
- Linda McBrierty: Treasurer and financial wiz.
- Josh Blakey: Junior programs and Development Squads Coach.
- Moya Credaro: Club Secretary and great supporter of our pennant team finalists.
- Carol Hassall: The lady to go to for catering and decorating (have you seen what she does with beer bottle caps!?).
- Bob Price: Always dependable, been around for ever, and is part of the furniture.
- Sue Cowell: The reason our Club is still going!

When asked why Marmion is the BEST Club in WA, Sue proudly responded, “Our Club was established in 1975. From its heyday with 52 pennant teams to now, where we celebrated winning the Spring Monday and Thursday Leagues, our Club members have stuck together. When our Padbury centre closed in 2002, we transitioned through five different venues before The Squash Factory was opened in 2009. Families stick together – and the Marmion Family is like super glue!!!” 🫶
Marmion Squash Club is always looking for pennant players, as well as more volunteers, especially for their junior programs (Working With Children Check required, but we can help you obtain one). Players of all skill levels are warmly welcome at Marmion Squash Club so if you or someone you know live nearby and would like to get involved, simply call Sue on 9408 0777 or email sjcowell@hotmail.com.
