Thanks Warren Oliver
Busselton had winners in 3 out of 4 divisions at the South West Masters Teams event!
48 Players from the south-west and Perth competed in the 39th SW Squash Masters, in Busselton at the Sebel Resortโs two courts, which started Friday afternoon through to Sunday.ย It was wonderful to have 10 new players in the tournament plus many long serving players.ย The Tournament was played in 4 Divisions with ages from 35 to early 80s.ย This is the biggest masterโs Squash event outside of Perth and one of the longest running.ย Busselton had 10 players competing.ย This competition started in Busselton in 1987 with only 25 players and now over 620 players have competed over the past 39 years!
The coveted division 1 shield was taken out by the appropriately named โTop Gunsโ team of Greg Laurence, David Beattie and Busseltonโs Dave Windsor, who completed a three peat, taking the shield for the past 3 years.ย All players won all their matches.
Second in division 1 was the โBusso Beaversโ team of Sean Brockman, Pete Hancock and Jason Mennell with their only loss to the eventual champs the Top Guns.ย Both Sean and Pete managed to get a game off their much higher ranked opponents in the last fixture of the weekend.ย Many of the division 1 matches were of extremely high standards, long rallies, superb vollies, amazing power and incredible touch, and at times what seemed impossible retrievals to keep the rallies going.
Division 2 was taken out by the undefeated Busselton team โBusso Bunyipsโ made up of Gys Van Zyl, Warren Oliver, and Chris Richards who all won every match. This was the 3rd year in a row where Warren has been part of the division 2 winning team. Runners-up were the โCambridge Nicksโ made up of Mason Woods, Barb Wood and Jim Barr who won all matches except against the โBusso Bunyipsโ.
Division 3 was won by team โBusso Belugasโ made up of local players Geoff Brown, Roger Skelton and Kelly Ferguson.ย In 2nd place was โLSD and Special Kโ Mirrabooka team of Louise Jamieson, Kim Duffecy and Deb Shahar. The division 3 competition was the closest of all divisions with final points being 18, 16,13, and 7 and in fact going into Sunday matches the top three teams were split by a solitary point and the title was anyoneโs.
Division 4 was taken out by โMandurah Mayhemโ team of Jo-anna Ward, Sharon Franklin and Ray Edkins (probably the oldest player in the tournament).ย Even though their team didnโt win every match, when they did win, they won very well. 2nd in division 4 was the undefeated team โThe Racqueteersโ of Bunbury players Judy Hughes, Steve Quinn and Jamie OโDea, with both Steve and Jamie playing in their first ever tournament, which was great to see.
Over the weekend there were only three players to go through the weekend without dropping a game โ division 1 Dave Windsor, division 2 Gys Van Zyl and division 3 Roger Skelton.
Saturday night saw 28 people socialise at Tonic by the Bay in which we recognised 13 players who have entered the tournament 10 or more times, with Warren Oliver, George Reid, Prue OโNeill, Kelvin Carmichael and Terry Brookes all having played more than 20 times since the tournament started back in 1987.
