Age has proven to be no barrier as Sue Hillier and Mike Corren have taken out 2018 WA Open bragging rights.

Sue has now taken out the Ladies title eight times, half of which were under her maiden Carter surname.  The symmetry is continued as it had been fifteen years since her last win in 2003 and thirty years since her first win in 1988.

Sue advanced to the final with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-5, 11-2) win over the no.2 seeded Trace Johnson from New South Wales with Amanda Hopps being the other finalist after having beaten Cindy Meintjes 3-0 (11-8, 11-9, 12-10) in a closely contested Semi Final. Unfortunately for the crowd that had gathered to watch what promised to be a very entertaining match, the final was cut short when injury forced Amanda to forfeit early in the second game with Sue leading 11-9, 4/0.

Mike chalked up his seventh WA Open Mens title when he gradually got the better of Singapore’s Chua Man Chin to win the final 3-1 (19-17, 11-9, 8-11, 11-3) after having prevailed in a very tight first game. Earlier Mike had to use all his experience to defeat Timothy Leong (also from Singapore) in a down to the wire 3-2 Semi Final (11-13, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9) which kept those in attendance on the edge of their seats. Chua Man Chin took out the other closely contested Semi Final with a 3-1 win against Tim Cowell (6-11, 11-5, 11-6, 12-10)

Both Sue and Mike are inspirational with their dedication to the Sport and they set an example to our younger players with the attention they pay to their preparation. Hopefully younger players witnessing the event were taking notice.
