Women’s Squash Week – Meet Amanda Hopps

How old were you when you discovered squash and how did you get into it?

My parents played since I was a young girl. I would spend hours at the courts playing upstairs with other kids while they played. I started to have hits and loved it straight away. When I was 11, my parents took over a squash centre in Perth and every afternoon after school I would walk to the courts and played for hours. There started my love affair and I played in all the junior and senior tournaments in Perth and around Australia that I could from a junior age.

What do you love most about the sport?

I love how creative the game is. I love being in a certain position and being able to choose a variety of shots within a split second. I love how you have to be a warrior on court – I love the battle! I love how fit and fast you have to be to play at the elite level – itโ€™s such a physical sport to play and you have to enjoy the fight. Lastly, there is nothing like the feeling of hitting a ball. It is simply the sweetest, most natural feeing in the world. Joyous!!

Why do you think more women should give it a go?

Itโ€™s the best one hour of power that you could try! We all love a good workout where we sweat and push ourselves – and let me tell you squash is the best workout of them all. You are twisting and turning, lunging, moving backwards, forwards, sideways at pace, running everywhere and then in between points, you have a few seconds of rest before you go again. Itโ€™s fun and itโ€™s dynamic to play! Itโ€™s a total body workout and it keeps you very present in the moment that you can leave all your stresses aside whilst you play. Itโ€™s the best!!

Thanks for chatting with us Amanda!
